How To Host the Perfect Field Picnic

How To Host the Perfect Field Picnic

Summer in the field is never just about the weather, it’s about the setup. Whether you’re parked by the river, tucked under the trees, or halfway through a shoot day, a well-packed picnic can turn a moment into a memory.

Here’s our guide to planning a field lunch that feels as effortless as it looks, with timeless gear, elevated details, and a nod to the season’s slower rhythm.

Pack smart, not sparse

A great picnic starts with a basket that does the heavy lifting. Our 2, 4 and 6 person hampers come fully kitted with plates, glasses, cutlery and accessories, leaving just enough room for your favourite bottle and a homemade pie.

Choose something generous for groups (like our brand new 4-Person Green Tweed Picnic Hamper with Wine Drawer) or the perfectly balanced Black Watch Tartan 4-Person Basket, an ideal companion for two couples or a family spread.

These hampers aren’t just for summer, they’re designed to carry through the seasons, and built to last for years of lunches, shoot days and roadside stops.

The pouring station

A picnic becomes a scene the moment you introduce the Field Bar.

Crafted for travel but styled for ceremony, it offers fold-out compartments for spirits, tumblers, tools and a moment of pause. It’s the kind of piece you bring once, and never picnic without again.

To complete the setup, we always add:

Styling It Right

This is where detail matters. Our new enamelware collection, launching in August, brings a nostalgic elegance to any field table. Lightweight, durable, and full of character, it’s perfect for cheese boards, plum tarts, or fresh summer salads.

Layer your setting with one of our recycled wool picnic blankets, the first in a new collaboration series, and finish with a classic baseball cap or fedora to shade you from the sun.

Remember: functional can still be beautiful - summer styling should feel soft, unfussy, and grounded in good design.

Mini Checklist: The Field Picnic Edit

  • [ ] Picnic hamper (2, 4 or 6 person)
  • [ ] Field Bar + protective cover
  • [ ] Blanket & tray table
  • [ ] Enamelware or reusable glassware
  • [ ] Flask or pre-mixed cocktail
  • [ ] Knife (Opinel No.8 is our go-to)
  • [ ] Your dog (always)

Field lunches are a tradition worth keeping, and one worth doing well.

So, whether you’re heading for the coast, setting up beside the truck, or pouring a drink halfway through a shoot, make it intentional.
