On the Road for Christmas: A Heritage Holiday Story

There’s something special about the drive toward Christmas, especially when the road runs through open country.

For Michael and Gina, the season always begins on the move. The Defender loaded, the dogs settled in, and that familiar stretch of prairie road stretching out ahead. It’s a ritual that marks the transition from one season to the next; steady, grounding, and unmistakably theirs.

The field, the road, the ranch

North Dakota in winter has a way of reminding you what matters.

Cold air, wide skies, the crunch of earth underfoot, and yes, a little mud on the tires never hurt.

“It’s that moment between one season and the next, before the celebrations begin, when you can just breathe.”

This year, with Delta away at training, the older dogs stepped up; patient, steady, and eager for the walk. They know the routine well: follow close, stay alert, wait at the tree line.

Cutting the Christmas tree is a tradition Michael and Gina look forward to every year. There’s nothing rushed about it. Just good boots, good company, and the satisfaction of doing something with your own hands.

These small moments, simple as they seem, are at the heart of Field Traditions; grounded, practical, tied to the land and to a way of living that respects heritage.

The gifts that make the journey worth it

Once settled in, wrapped boxes are placed under a tree, each one packed with care, ready to gift. Leather goods that improve with age, barware built with weight and intention, small stocking fillers chosen because they feel personal and lasting.

Nothing flashy.

Nothing hurried.

Just good things, made well.

A season of gratitude

Christmas isn’t about doing more, it’s about anchoring yourself in the things that matter:

  • the steady drive
  • the dogs
  • the tree
  • the fire
  • and the people you share it with

From all of us at Field Traditions, may your season be steady, warm, and filled with heritage and good company.
