Enjoyment Long After the Hunt - 2

Enjoyment Long After the Hunt

If you are like me, I no longer think of how many years I have left, but of how many hunting seasons remain. This is certainly not to be misconstrued as morbid. The fact is, hunting and providing food for my family and friends is one of my greatest joys.

In a world where convenience often takes precedence over connection, there is something truly special about hunting and cooking your own food. This age-old practice not only reconnects us with nature but also allows us to appreciate the journey. Love of the animal and the harvest of the animals that you love can be difficult to explain. When done ethically and truly, it is the ultimate act of conservationism.

Exploring the joys of hunting and cooking your own food, highlighting the sense of self-sufficiency in connecting with nature and the culinary delights that come with it, are at the core of this journey. Hunting and cooking your own food provide a unique opportunity to become self-sufficient and decrease reliance on commercial food sources. For me, the idea of “whole foods” has been ingrained in me throughout my childhood. My father is from a small fishing village in Spain, and my mother is from central Spain where there were very limited to no sources of commercially prepared foods.

Hunting and cooking your own food provides a unique opportunity to become self-sufficient and reduce reliance on commercial food sources. By venturing into the wilderness, one becomes an active participant in the food chain, relying on your skills and knowledge to produce sustenance. This connection with nature fosters a deep appreciation for the environment, wildlife, and the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

The act of hunting itself is exhilarating! It requires a tremendous amount of patience, skill, and a deep understanding of animal behavior. You must hone in on your instincts, sharpen your senses, and immerse yourself in the natural surroundings. The thrill of tracking, stalking and ultimately harvesting your own game is an incredibly rewarding and humbling experience.

For me, one of the most gratifying aspects of hunting is the opportunity to transform your harvest into a delicious meal. Cooking your own game allows you to fully appreciate the texture and flavors of the meat, knowing that it was sourced sustainably and ethically. From field dressing to preparing mouth-watering dishes, the entire process becomes a culinary adventure.

Growing up with amazing family cooks has had a significant impact on me. I have a profound enjoyment of the culinary experience. I was fortunate enough to take classes at the French Culinary Institute and Institute of Culinary Education which has fostered my love of cooking.

Hunting and cooking your own food often go hand in hand with sharing the bounty with loved ones. Gathering around a table to enjoy a meal from your own harvest creates a sense of community and connection.  It allows you to share stories, traditions, and the fruits of your labor.  It fosters a deeper appreciation for the food on your plate and the relationships that surround it.

Hunting and cooking your own food is a journey that goes well beyond mere sustenance. It reconnects us with nature, instills a sense of self-sufficiency, and offers a unique culinary experience.  From the thrill of the hunt to the joy of preparing and sharing a meal, this practice allows us to form a deeper connection with the food we eat and the natural world around us.
